Tainan, Taiwan

The 5th World Congress on Bioengineering WACBE, co-organized by Drs. Fong-Chin Su and Feng-Huei Lin, was held in Tainan, Taiwan on August 18-21, 2011. In honor of Dr. Shu Chien’s 80th birthday and Dr. Savio L-Y. Woo’s 70th birthday, WACBE 2011 celebrated the lifetime achievements of Drs. Chien and Woo with special symposia on mechanobiology and orthopaedic bioengineering, respectively. WACBE 2011 attracted enthusiastic participation from around the world with 340 poster and podium presentations. The scientific program consisted of plenary lectures, keynote lectures, special symposia, five parallel podium sessions, and two poster sessions. Dr. Michael M-C Lai, a world-renowned leader in virus research, delivered the honorary Congress lecture. In pace with the rapid growth of biomedical engineering programs in Asia, Dr. Kai-Nan An organized a special forum on bioengineering education. The Savio & Pattie Woo Traveling Fellowship and the Young Investigator’s Awards, courtesy of IEEE EMBS President Zhi-Pei Liang, strongly encouraged participation from the young generation. In total, there were more than 1200 participants.
